1962–63 DDR-Oberliga

The season 1962/63 was the 14th edition of the East German Oberliga. Master was the first time SC Motor Jena. The season began on August 18, 1962 and ended on 12 May 1963.

Course of the season

For the first time the Master came from the district of Gera. Motor Jena secured the title in the penultimate round, as the direct competitor Empor Rostock home was defeated 2-1. For Rostock it was the second runner-up in a row. Behind Jena and Rostock landed the champion of the previous forward and bismuth Berlin Karl- Marx-Stadt. Bismuth experienced a proverbial roller coaster ride: After the first round the team was still Table and eventually ended up as the best back round team still in fourth place.

Activist Brieske - Senftenberg was already two games remaining firmly relegated. Activist was the bad second half doomed, where the team finished in last place from the 15th Round by the end. So once again rose from a founding member of the league. Senftenberg never saw again after league football since the SC activist was then dissolved and incorporated into the newly formed SC Cottbus.

Exciting was the decision for the second relegation zone. Before the last game were four teams danger of relegation: Motor Karl- Marx-Stadt (10th, 22 points, -5 goals), Rotation Leipzig ( 11, 22, -7), construction Magdeburg ( 12, 21, -3 ) and Dynamo Dresden ( 13, 21, -9). Leipzig and Magdeburg could each win their away games so that the decision in the direct encounter between Dynamo Dresden and Motor Karl -Marx-Stadt fell. 35,000 spectators at the Dresden Rudolf- Harbig Stadium, the teams played against each other draw, which engine in the league and remained Dresden descent.

The highest number of audience scored the game against Dynamo Dresden Motor Karl- Marx-Stadt on the final day with 35,000 visitors. There were 541 goals, ie 2.97 per game. The highest victory scored Dynamo Dresden 7-0 against Brieske - Senftenberg ( 21 Matchday). The highest-scoring encounters were with nine hits, the game engine Karl- Marx-Stadt - Erfurt (7th Round, 4:5 ), Zwickau - Erfurt (11th Round, 5:4 ) and Halle - Senftenberg (7th Round, 6: 3).

Player of the year

After the season, the honor was awarded Player of the Year for the first time. Manfred Kaiser from bismuth SC Karl- Marx-Stadt was awarded first scheduling of this title. As in the following years the names of the second and third place winners were published. 1963 landed Peter Ducke from SC Motor Jena in second place, while had to settle Dieter Erler from bismuth SC Karl- Marx-Stadt third place.

Fdgb Cup

The fdgb Cup was in this season of league - Seventh Motor Zwickau, who had also defeated in the semifinals Cup defender chemistry hall. In the final Zwickau was surprising compared to the second division chemistry Zeitz. For the later master Jena competition was already in round three at the end.

International Competitions

The European Cup season was less successful for all DDR participants. Vorwärts Berlin ( in the European Cup of Champions against Dukla Prague) and chemistry hall ( in the European Cup Winners' Cup against OFK Belgrade ) failed on the first opponents. The Leipzig city selection came in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup to the second round and was defeated there in the third playoff Petrolul Ploieşti. At the International Football Cup this season took part no GDR representatives.
