Background

All the teams had mastered time after the Canadian Grand Prix, the return trip to Europe. Nevertheless, there were a few changes in the field of participants.

Last year's winner Ludovico Scarfiotti was looking for a cockpit for a guest stint and found this in the Eagle team of Dan Gurney, as Ferrari again took up with only one unit carriage, as already in the most recent race of the current season. With Giancarlo Baghetti there was a second Starter local host, in this case at the wheel of a third factory Lotus.

The factory Honda team had skipped the trip overseas to complete the development of the new type RA300, which was then used in Monza with factory driver John Surtees at the wheel for the first time. Due to its structural similarity to an Indy 500 race car from Lola the new car by the press was jokingly referred to as " Hondola ".

Since Pedro Rodríguez had to continue to take a break due to injury, you were in the Cooper works team of the Belgian Jacky Ickx the chance to make his debut in a Formula 1 car, having previously taken part as a Formula 2 driver on the Grand Prix of Germany five weeks and had there convinced by good performance.

Training

For the fourth year in a row, Jim Clark secured the pole position in the Lotus 49. For the Lotus factory team this was actually already the seventh consecutive pole position of the season. With Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren occupied two drivers in their own constructions, the two remaining seats in the front row. Chris Amon qualified in the Ferrari 312 for fourth place and Dan Gurney Eagle T1G for the fifth. Thus, among the top five grid positions one copy of the most successful racing cars of the season was represented.

This was followed by Denis Hulme, Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill in the third row.

Race

The race began with a misunderstanding between the starter and a few pilots who interpreted the signs to the pre- release than the race. Thus, there was a confusion between drivers who slowly rolled to their starting positions and those who are already fully accelerated. Because despite this delicate situation was no accident, the start has not been canceled.

Brabham went first in the lead, but was overtaken in the second round of Gurney. This was followed by Hill before Clark, McLaren, Stewart and Hulme. Towards the end of the third round, Clark took the lead and Hill came to second place after Gurney was canceled due to an engine failure. Hulme was able to keep the pace of both Lotus and even briefly take the lead, before he was again ousted shortly thereafter by Clark from that position.

In the 13th round Clark was forced to make a pit stop due to a puncture. His mechanics were not prepared for it. When he returned back on track, he had a lap behind the now leading Hill. There followed one of the most striking comebacks of Formula 1 history. Favored by slipstream duels, the Scotsman rounded back within a few rounds and joined again at the top of group whose leading also repeatedly changed due to wind shadow maneuvers. On lap 31 the leading in the championship Hulme had to abandon the race due to an overheated engine.

Towards the end of the race, overtook Clark the third-placed Surtees. Due to technical failure of Hill he came to the second rank, and finally by an overtaking maneuver against Brabham back in the lead. Surtees overtook the Australians also.

The latest round began Clark still as the leader, on the last long straight, however, went out of the gasoline. Surtees and Brabham then dueled in the Parabolica in the final meters of the race for the win. Surtees eventually won by half a car length and thus reached directly at the premiere of RA300 its first and only victory. Clark rolled about 23 seconds later, as a third party silently across the finish line.
