- Start of color television in several countries. In Austria, the color TV was officially inaugurated on 1 January of the PAL system. The first mission which is to see color in Austria, is the traditional New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.
- In the GDR, DFF 2 sends from 3 October (a few days before the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the GDR on October 7 ) in color. In this case, the SECAM system is used.
