1972–73 Austrian football championship

The Austrian Football Championship 1972/73 was hosted by the club Austrian Football Association. As a base for the National League East Regional Leagues (Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia ) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Austria) were used. As the third power level acted the appropriate local leagues in the state associations.

National League

The championship in the National League was contested by 16 teams, who met during the entire game twice each year. The gaming community between Wacker Innsbruck and WSG Wattens could be jointly Austrian football champions for the second time and thus defend the title the previous season in the playing season. For Wacker, it was the third title. As Austrian champion up game community could qualify for the European Cup in 1974, where the club was eliminated in the first round. Cupfinalist Rapid Wien was allowed to participate in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1974, where the team reached the knockout stages. The last two teams in the table had to dismount. This was black and white Bregenz and Admira Wr. Neustadt, who were thus no longer represented in the next game season in the premier league. These teams were replaced by three masters of the regional leagues, 1st Simmering SC (East), WSG Radenthein (center) and FC Rätia Bludenz (West). Sturm Graz would have had to descend, but protested successfully with reference to the irregular championship end (due to the outbreak of foot - and -mouth disease in Lower Austria championship games were canceled ) against relegation.
