At the ceremony for the CMA Awards in October, presented Charlie Rich ( the CMA "Entertainer of the Year" of the previous year ) the winners. After he opened the envelope, he took a lighter and burned the paper with the name of the winner. Then he announced with audible disgust: " My good friend John Denver " With this action, Rich wanted to express his dissatisfaction with the drift of country music into pop camp.
