Background

About two weeks after the tragic verlaufenen Grand Prix of Spain, the organizers of the Monaco GP attached particular importance to the safety to prevent a similar tragedy. Within a short time, additional barriers and catch fences were installed. To reduce the risk of mass collision at the first corner, the staggered grid was created, which was unusual at the time, over the following years, however, became the standard. It was also decided to limit the number of participants to 18 vehicles. Since the entry list comprised 26 pilots, which meant leaving the eight slowest driver after training.

Williams driver Jacques Laffite returned instead of representing him Tony Brise back into his cockpit back. Hesketh Racing announced a second factory cars next to the master driver James Hunt under the team name "Polar Caravans". Behind it hid a sponsor of the guest starter Torsten Palm, who participated for the first time at a Grand Prix weekend. Three vehicles of the type 308 were together with the private Hesketh Alan Jones thus first reported.

Training

Because of the guaranteed withdrawal of the eight slowest cars the training was consistently exciting and marked by numerous rounds of the participants.

With six tenths of a second ahead of his pursuers Niki Lauda secured in the Ferrari 312T once again the pole position. Behind it were again the two Shadow works driver convince with good performances in training, with Tom Pryce was able to offer the best round of his teammate Jean -Pierre Jarier scarce. This was followed with Ronnie Peterson, Vittorio Brambilla, Clay Regazzoni, Jody Scheckter, Carlos Pace and Emerson Fittipaldi six different cars on the grid positions four through nine.

Among the eight riders who failed at the qualification hurdle was next to two Williams drivers also at that time already 46 -year-old Graham Hill, who then ended his racing career to henceforth fully the duties as team manager of his racing stable Embassy Hill devote.

Race

Due to wet track conditions, the field started to rain tires in the race. Lauda away defended its top position from the start, while Pryce opposite Peterson Jarier and lost places. The resulting second-placed Jarier touched the barriers during the first round in the Mirabeau curve, but could initially continue. Due to slight damage to its landing gear he touched the barriers, however, a little later in the harbor chicane again and retired. The sequence at the top with Lauda before Peterson and Pryce thus produced was then up to the 19th round exist. Then Pryce turned and fell behind Scheckter and Fittipaldi back to fifth place.

Due to the drying track several drivers drove to the pits to switch to slicks. Also Lauda did so on lap 24, lost his lead but only for a short. Peterson waited too long with his stop, which was reflected in the fact that he came back after a successful change of tires behind Fittipaldi, Scheckter pace and on track. Through a puncture to check Marketers car, which forced the South Africans to a pit stop, Peterson came back to fourth place.

There was at first no more places shifts in position until the race had to settle due to the achieved time limit of two hours after 75 of the scheduled 78 rounds actually. Fittipaldi had been able to catch more about Lauda and crossed 1.7 seconds after the Austrians the finish line. In the last round Jochen Mass was overtaken by Patrick Depailler, making this fifth received two points and Mass sixth only one point.
