Background
A week after the Canadian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season took place. It was held in Watkins Glen under the official designation "United States Grand Prix " during the race that had taken place on March 28 in Long Beach, as had been the "Grand Prix of Long Beach " means.
Guy Edwards had left the team Hesketh Racing. The thus liberated cockpit was then awarded to the Brazilian guest starter Alex Ribeiro. For Chris Amon jumped at Walter Wolf Racing one of the Australians Warwick Brown and thus came to his first and only Grand Prix participation.
Training
James Hunt, who was in the World Cup scoring only eight points behind Niki Lauda, left training really made a strong impression by having secured the pole position in front of Jody Scheckter. The second series was formed by the March factory riders Ronnie Peterson and Vittorio Brambilla. They were followed by Lauda and the third March - pilot Hans -Joachim Stuck.
Race
The best start succeeded Scheckter. He took over the lead from Hunt and Brambilla, in turn, his teammate Peterson outdated. While Scheckter and Hunt were able to sell a little from the rest of the field, Lauda overtook the two before him March lying and thus took the third place.
Ensign driver Jacky Ickx crashed hard on lap 15. Although his car was struck head- on into the barriers, broke in two and caught fire, Ickx escaped with relatively minor injuries. When driving over debris, Jacques Laffite and Vittorio Brambilla damaged in each promising positions their tires and had to finish the race. This came Jochen Mass, Hans -Joachim Stuck and Clay Regazzoni in the points.
In the 36th round of Hunt took the lead ahead of Scheckter, but they had four laps later left the South Africans again due to a small driving error. On lap 45 overtook Hunt again and defended the top position then to the finish.
Lauda's third place was enough to clinch the Constructors' World Championship in favor of Ferrari. Because Hunt had to reduce the deficit by his victory on Lauda by five points to just three points, the driver's title decider, however, was postponed until the season finale in Japan.
