Background

The final two races of the 1980 season, which took place on the North American continent, were overshadowed by the duel for the world championship between Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet, who were in the standings at that time only one point apart.

After the surprising withdrawal of Vittorio Brambilla following the Italian Grand Prix, the Alfa Romeo factory team his compatriot Andrea de Cesaris hired as a replacement.
