Background

On the occasion of his home Grand Prix graduated Gerhard Berger his first Formula 1 race at the wheel of a second ATS. Stefan Bellof returned to the participants and again took his place at Tyrrell instead of Mike Thackwell one who had two weeks earlier represented him at the Grand Prix of Germany.

Training

Nelson Piquet qualified for the pole position ahead of Alain Prost, Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda. The two Renault driver Patrick Tambay and Derek Warwick formed the third row in front of Teo Fabi and Nigel Mansell.

Since his car was found after training as underweight, Stefan Bellof was disqualified. He would, however, like his team-mate Stefan Johansson due to poor lap times anyway not have been qualified for one of the 26 starting places.

Race

The first launch attempt was aborted because Elio de Angelis stalled his engine.

The second attempt was successful and Piquet defended its top position against Prost. De Angelis was like Lauda overtaken by both Renault drivers Tambay and Warwick. Subsequently, the two outdated drivers needed up to the tenth round to counter successful, with Lauda henceforth was in third place ahead of de Angelis.

A variation on the first three positions resulted in again until lap 29, when Prost turned off after he ran over a patch of oil. Lauda came by to second place ahead of Ayrton Senna, who had fought in the meantime from tenth place on the grid to the front. This was favored among others by the technical failure of de Angelis in the previous round. Just three laps later Senna was overtaken by Tambay. On lap 35 he was forced to retire due to an engine failure.

To the 40th round succeeded Lauda to close in on the leaders Piquet. In the course of a lapping maneuver resulted in an overtake that successfully took advantage of Lauda.

As Tambay failed on lap 43 due to engine failure, Michele Alboreto was at the end of third parties before Teo Fabi and the two Arrows pilots Thierry Boutsen and Marc Surer.
