Background

From the start of the European season decreed Arrows as the third team in addition to Brabham and ATS engines from BMW. You paid for the time being, however, only Thierry Boutsen with the new Arrows A7, which was equipped with the turbo engine, and let Marc Surer witerhin compete with the A6, which was powered by a Ford -Cosworth conventional naturally aspirated engine.

Training

During training, the Goodyear tires presented as the most suitable for the course of Zolder dar. Not least because the Ferrari driver Michele Alboreto and René Arnoux occupied the front row in front of Keke Rosberg. In the fourth place followed with Derek Warwick the first Michelin Pilot before Elio de Angelis, Riccardo Patrese and Manfred Winkelhock.

Race

While Alboreto realized his pole position into a lead which he defended to the finish, Warwick was able to overtake both Rosberg and Arnoux and thus occupy the second rank. Angle Hock followed before de Angelis and Patrese. However, this difference in the third round of due to damage to the ignition system, and left by the sixth Alain Prost, the two laps later de Angelis passed, but then retired due to a technical defect.

Until the eighth round of the ninth started from Nelson Piquet worked up to fifth forward. In lap 23 he overtook angle Hock and benefited from falling back shortly afterwards by Arnoux, thereby occupying the third place. This he lost in round 34 Rosberg to which, however, fell back to sixth place from the 44th round due to tire problems.

Five laps to go took Rosberg in third place of Arnoux, but different in the penultimate round due to lack of fuel. He was considered a fourth behind René Arnoux, but before Elio de Angelis and Stefan Bellof due to its distance traveled.

As the Tyrrell team was eliminated late in the season of the World Cup, moved all the pilots who had reached the goal by Stefan Bellof, for a place on. Thus later Ayrton Senna received a championship point.
