Background

Eight years after the Grand Prix of Germany in 1976 returned to Formula 1 back to the race track in the Eifel, in order to discharge the Grand Prix of Europe. The race, however, was completed no longer on the more than 20 km long and for Formula 1 outmoded Nordschleife, but on the at that time newly built Grand Prix track with around 4.5 kilometers in length, which the then prevailing safety requirements corresponded.

As a result of the announcement by BMW to trying to deliver a more motors to the ATS Racing team in the 1985 season, team boss sacked Günter Schmid previous regular driver Manfred Winkelhock and decided to finish the 1984 season with the previous guest driver Gerhard Berger.

Mauro Baldi returned instead of Huub Rothengatter back to the Team Spirit Racing. Ayrton Senna replaced with Toleman from the Italian Pierluigi Martini, who had three weeks earlier represented him at the Grand Prix of Italy.

Training

The front row sat down in accordance with the training result on Friday in Italy, as from the Brabham of Nelson Piquet and the McLaren of Alain Prost together. Patrick Tambay and Keke Rosberg were the second row in front of the two Ferrari drivers Michele Alboreto and René Arnoux.

Race

During the last lap Piquet had to give up his second place at Alboreto due to lack of fuel. Niki Lauda was fourth ahead of René Arnoux Riccardo Patrese and. Thus He took a lead of 4.5 championship points towards his victorious teammate Alain Prost to the season finale in Portugal.

Michele Alboreto and Nelson Piquet completed at the same time the fastest lap of the race, each in its 62nd round.
