Background
After less than six months, a Grand Prix of South Africa was held back because the race had taken place in 1983, exceptionally, at the end of the season. The field was unchanged compared to the Brazilian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
Training
Nelson Piquet claimed pole position ahead of Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell and Patrick Tambay. Alain Prost shared the third row with Teo Fabi. This was followed by Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda.
During the warm-ups before the race there was a serious accident occurred. Piercarlo Ghinzani came up with his Osella FA1F of the track. The impact of the crash barrier was so violent that the car was torn in two. These hurled back onto the track, where the leaking fuel ignited. Ghinzani suffered minor burns on his hands, but otherwise remained unharmed. Race
As Prost's car would not start on the grid, ran the Frenchman in the pits, mounted the T-car and rejoined the race without permission too early so on.
