The football in 1985 was overshadowed by two stadium disasters. On 11 May, the Valley Parade fire disaster claimed in Bradford, 56 dead. Only two weeks later, on May 29, the Heysel disaster occurred before the European Cup final in Brussels. When rioting Liverpool fans 39 people died, English clubs were excluded for five years from all international competitions ( Liverpool FC for seven).
