Reports

Background

Derek Warwick, who had not received the hoped-for place in Team Lotus at the start of the season due to the negative attitude of Ayrton Senna, was the successor of the fatally injured Elio de Angelis at Brabham.

Marc Surer had incurred in the course of an accident at the Hessen Rally serious injuries and had to end his Formula 1 career. The Team Arrows committed then as reserve driver Christian Danner. Because of this, however, was bound contractually to Osella, he had to continue to compete for this team. He found out about it only when he was already strapped in Arrows A8 and wanted to start training.

Training

Nigel Mansell secured the pole position in front of Ayrton Senna. This was followed by Nelson Piquet before Alain Prost, René Arnoux and Keke Rosberg.

Race

In the warm -up Patrick Tambay injuries to the feet pulled to and therefore had to forego participation in the race.

Mansell took the lead and gave rapidly a head start, since Senna seemed to stop the lying behind pilots Prost, Piquet, Rosberg and Arnoux. In the fifth round succeeded Cheers to overtake the Brazilian. This had to dodge and thus drive an unfavorable curve line, which also Rosberg, Piquet and Arnoux came past him.

Until the 17th lap, Rosberg fought Prost and Mansell over the top. Then he noticed that he spent with this procedure, too much fuel, he slowed down a little so that the two previously overhauled again could catch up to him. As part of the rounding of Alan Jones in the 22nd round Mansell took advantage of a little carelessness Rosberg to get back to take the lead. Since he still had sufficient fuel reserves, he gained a head start and won again.

Prost, who had his team-mate Rosberg also overhauled, fell after a pit stop, which lasted quite long due to a clamping nut, back to fifth place. By the end of the race, but he fought his way back up to second place forward. Piquet was third ahead of Rosberg, Senna and Arnoux.
