The only change in the participants compared to the Italian Grand Prix two weeks earlier was the return of Allen Berg instead of Alex Caffi.

Training

Ayrton Senna secured his seventh pole position of the season ahead of Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Gerhard Berger, Teo Fabi and Nelson Piquet.

All riders achieved their respective bests during the second qualifying session on Saturday.

Race

Nigel Mansell went straight in the lead and defended this position until the checkered flag. Senna followed him for much of the race in second place. Only when he had mounted in the 32th round at the box new tires, he gave up the position for a round of cheers. However, in the last round he fell due to lack of fuel back to fourth place behind Prost and Piquet. The two Ferrari drivers Stefan Johansson and Michele Alboreto took places five and six.
