Background
Since Zakspeed advanced as the last of the participating teams his involvement with Huub Rothengatter on two vehicles, two-car teams were only reported for the race at Imola, which was quite unusual at that time yet and only in the course of the following years became the standard.
Alan Jones drove a new car of the type Lola THL2 who possessed the first time on a turbocharged engine from Cosworth. His team-mate Patrick Tambay first went further in THL1 with hard - engine at the start.
Training
For the third time in a row, the starting order was on the first three places in front of Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell. The reigning world champion Alain Prost qualified for the fourth place ahead of Michele Alboreto and Keke Rosberg.
Race
Piquet initially took the lead ahead of Senna, while Mansell fell back due to an engine problem behind the two McLaren drivers Prost and Rosberg. In the fourth round, both McLaren passed before Senna. Rosberg also overtook his team mate Prost and was thus on the second rank.
After Senna's technically -related failure in round twelve Michele Alboreto was in fourth place ahead of René Arnoux, Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger.
In the 29th round Rosberg came in the lead. Since Prost pit stop but proceeded somewhat faster than that of the Finns, the Frenchman took over from the 33rd round of the peak position and defended it to the finish. Piquet, who was in third place after the pit stops had to save fuel and watch the process of being overtaken by Alboreto, who followed him closely.
