Reports

Background

For the first time since 1977, again a Japanese Grand Prix was held. The race was first held at the Suzuka International Racing Course.

Before the penultimate World Cup race of the season had only the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell chances of winning the World Cup, the Brazilian had twelve points ahead of the British.

In AGS Pascal Fabre was replaced by Roberto Moreno, who was first reported for a Grand Prix around five years after his missed qualifying for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands again in 1982.

Training

During the practice sessions on Friday Mansell crashed hard. Because of his injuries, it was decided after a night in the hospital to deny him participation in the race. He flew on Saturday then back to Europe. Nelson Piquet was thus laid for the third time as a world champion in Formula 1.

Gerhard Berger qualified for the pole position ahead of Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen and his Ferrari team-mate Michele Alboreto. Nelson Piquet formed together with Teo Fabi the third row in front of Ayrton Senna and Riccardo Patrese.

Race

Gerhard Berger reached a start - to-finish victory. Boutsen, who had initially occupied the second place, fell in the twelfth round, first behind Senna and Piquet, as well as in the next round behind Stefan Johansson.

After Piquet was excreted five laps due to an engine failure, Michele Alboreto reached at the end of the fourth behind Berger, Senna and Johansson, and before Thierry Boutsen and Satoru Nakajima.
