Background

There were at the same pilots who also had the Grand Prix of Germany run two weeks.

Training

The fact that Williams driver Riccardo Patrese a lap time under 1:20 min scored and was thus faster than single, as Ayrton Senna, was for the first time in the 1989 season, not one of the two McLaren drivers on the pole position. For the third place is qualified surprising Alex Caffi before Thierry Boutsen, Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger.

Race

Patrese was initially able to defend against Senna 's leading position. Also Caffi held its third position to the fourth round, but then fell behind Berger and four laps later Prost behind back, because the Pirelli tires in qualifying were very well suited for single fast laps though, in the race, however, were weak.

Nigel Mansell, who had started from twelfth place out, made some good positions and thus reached in the 41th round in third place. As Patrese retired on lap 53 due to a cooler damage to Mansell was in second place behind Senna. Just at the moment when the two aufliefen to be lapped Stefan Johansson, this slowed abruptly due to gearbox problems. Although Senna responded quickly, but lost some speed, Mansell took advantage, finishing off. The Brit finally reached his second win of the season. Ayrton Senna was second ahead of Thierry Boutsen, Alain Prost, Eddie Cheever and Nelson Piquet.
