1989 UEFA European Under-16 Championship

The 7th U-16 Football Championship was held in the period from May 4 to 14, 1989 in Denmark. Portugal was winning by a 4-1 victory over the GDR. The Federal Republic could not qualify.

On 6 May 1989, the Soviet Union in the group stage points issued for the first time since Hungary in 1985 had won the team of each group match.

Mode

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups played each team once against each other. The group winners reached the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the semifinal losers play for third place.

The GDR and the Soviet Union concluded the preliminary round from point - and torgleich. The GDR was a penalty shoot- group winners.

Final round

The U-16 national team of Portugal became the first European football champions of U16/U17-Junioren.
