Background

As a result of provoked by Ayrton Senna with Alain Prost collision two weeks earlier, shortly after the start of the Japanese Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari demanded under threat of withdrawal from the Formula 1 of the FISA new rules for avoiding dangerous collisions and corresponding penalties for infringement.

The final race in Australia was the 500th Grand Prix Formula 1 history. It replaced an unchanged compared to the Japanese Grand Prix participants.

Training

The two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger secured the front row before the two Ferrari 641 of Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost. Jean Alesi before Riccardo Patrese followed and the two Benetton team-mate Nelson Piquet and Roberto Moreno.

Race

First, Berger was able to defend second place behind the leading Senna against Mansell. However, in the second round he pretended accidentally firing his engine. While he corrected this again, Mansell was able to pass him.

Until the ninth round Piquet got to Prost and Berger passing on to third place. Up to 43 outstanding, Mansell with Senna dueling for the lead. Then he fell back due to a small driving error and a pit stop in fifth.

As Senna was forced to retire in the 62nd round due to a gearbox failure, Piquet took over the lead from Prost, Mansell and Berger. On lap 73 Mansell overtook Prost and got a the leader. This, however, defended its position to the finish. Mansell was second ahead of Prost, Berger, Boutsen and Patrese with about three seconds behind.
