Background

Stefan Johansson was replaced by Alex Caffi at Footwork and ended his Formula 1 career with the then record of having won the most podium finishes without a victory. This mark was reached in 2009 when the Grand Prix of Malaysia by Nick Heidfeld and surpassed two years later at the same place.

Due to contractual obligations in the Japanese Formula 3000 Johnny Herbert could not compete for Germany GP. The Team Lotus announced, the local Paydriver Michael Bartels the opportunity to complete his Formula 1 debut.

Training

Alain Prost, who as the faster of the two Ferrari drivers secured the fifth place, was on his best lap 1.5 seconds slower than Nigel Mansell. Jordan - pilot Andrea de Cesaris, who followed in seventh place behind Prost's team mate Jean Alesi, already missing about 3.2 seconds for the absolute best time. Race

After a good start, Mansell immediately put off by its competitors. Berger initially followed in second place ahead of Senna, Prost, Alesi and Patrese. In the 13th round he lost by an unscheduled pit stop connecting to the chase group.
