Ayrton Senna reached the third pole position at the third race weekend. Next to him, Riccardo Patrese qualified for the front row in front of Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell, Gerhard Berger and Stefano Modena.

Due to rain it was during the second qualification round on Saturday to no time improvements.

Race

Shortly before the start it began to rain. At the recent introduction of several rounds of Prost turned in the Rivazza off and thus had, in contrast to Berger, who also turned, not to take part in the race.

Patrese went after the start in leadership and initially procured a step ahead of Senna. Nigel Mansell retired after just a few meters from due to a collision with Martin Brundle. Also for Nelson Piquet and Jean Alesi, the race was stopped after driving errors on the damp track after a few laps.

In the fourth round, when the track dried out already, Bertrand Gachot damaged in the Tamburello curve at a spin the front of his car. Shortly thereafter, Maurício Gugelmin collided with the damaged vehicle. Both were still able to continue the race.

After ten rounds Patrese had to pit and thus leave Senna the lead due to misfires. Although the Italians returned again with several laps on the track back, was, however, a little later on. Ayrton Senna led in front of Gerhard Berger, Stefano Modena and Roberto Moreno, after the above fourth-placed Satoru Nakajima was eliminated due to a gearbox failure. And Modena had to give up because of a similar problem, Moreno came in third place, followed by JJ Lehto, Pierluigi Martini and Eric van de Poele. In the 52nd round Lehto took the third place of Moreno. When he retired shortly thereafter, Martini came in fourth place ahead of van de Poele, which was, however, considered due to lack of fuel at the end of ninth. The fifth and sixth occupied the two Lotus drivers Mika Häkkinen and Julian Bailey. They thus scored the first points of their Formula 1 career. JJ Lehto reached for the first and only time the podium.
