Background

For financial reasons, the traditional Brabham team opted for an immediate and permanent withdrawal from Formula 1

For the benefit of newcomers Emanuele Naspetti, who brought sponsorship money, Paul Belmondo had to vacate his seat in March. Christian Fittipaldi returned after several weeks due to injury break instead of its representation Alessandro Zanardi back into the Minardi team.

The Scuderia Ferrari brought a copy of a further developed version of the F92A at the start. The car was known as the F92AT and was driven by Jean Alesi.

Training

As a result of the withdrawal of Brabham included the message list exactly 30 pilots. As this was the maximum allowed number for participation in the training, could be dispensed with a pre-qualification.

During the first free practice sessions on Friday morning accident Érik Comas in the fast BLANCHIMONT curve so severely that he lost consciousness for 17 minutes. He did not participate in the further course of the race weekend.

Nigel Mansell secured his tenth pole position of the year preceding Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Riccardo Patrese, Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger. Thierry Boutsen and Mika Hakkinen were the fourth row in front of Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert.

The lap times achieved during the first qualification round on Friday could not be beaten on Saturday due to rain. Nonetheless some pilots took to the track to test the behavior of their vehicles on rain tires. This led to two other serious accidents by Gerhard Berger and Pierluigi Martini, which was caused in each case by hydroplaning. Both pilots escaped unharmed.

Race

While Senna took the lead ahead of Mansell and Patrese, it came to Berger's McLaren MP4/7A to a clutch problem. The following pilots, however, managed to dodge the cars left standing time. In the second round Mansell pulled over in the BLANCHIMONT curve on Senna.

When it started to rain after a few minutes, Mansell headed for one of the first the box to allow mount rain tires. Patrese, who had recently also overhauled Senna, thus attaining the lead. As he turned off to tire changes in the pits, took Senna, who speculated that the rain would just stop for a moment, the top position. Since this turned out to be incorrect, he also admitted after ten rounds change his tires, which Mansell came back in the lead. Patrese followed in second place ahead of Schumacher.

When the track was drying increasingly decided Schumacher on lap 30 after a small mistake in the field Stavelot, switch back to slicks. The two Williams drivers initially did not respond to it and lost with their worn wets time over Schumacher. This took over in the 34th round of the lead ahead of the two. His team-mate Brundle was in fourth place ahead of Häkkinen and Senna. Because of a defect in the exhaust of his car Mansell fell against the leader Schumacher back on. Patrese had to deal with a similar problem, but was still able to defend against Brundle third. In the third last lap Senna Häkkinen pointed to the sixth.

Michael Schumacher scored his first Grand Prix victory and the Williams team secured the Constructors' World Championship in 1992.
