Background

With a total of six race cars McLaren traveled to third world championship race of the year in Brazil. These were three copies of the MP4/6B used until then, who were all as courtesy cars available, as well as three copies of the new MP4/7A, the first time this weekend should take part in a Grand Prix.

The team Andrea Moda Formula was again present and made it to just before the end of the deadline, to make the two racing cars of the type S921 ready to go. Since the envisaged as a second driver Formula 1 newcomer Perry McCarthy, however, could show no super license, only one of the two cars for Roberto Moreno was admitted to the race weekend.

Training

By participating Moreno competed this weekend for the first time in the current season 31 pilots, in order to qualify for one of the 26 starting places. Since there is still only 30 vehicles were registered for regular workouts, which is already known from the previous process of pre-qualification had to be carried out on Friday morning. In addition to Roberto Moreno, the two Larrousse pilots Bertrand Gachot Ukyo Katayama and Michele Alboreto and for Footwork and Andrea Chiesa for Fondmetal had to attend. Moreno was eliminated, so that for Andrea Moda again no possibility for race participation revealed.

With shorter by almost two seconds fastest lap on qualifying for the second row McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, the two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese secured on the third race weekend of the year for the third time on the front row. Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi shared the third row in front of Martin Brundle and Pierluigi Martini.

Race

Since Berger's engine could not be started in time for the warm-up lap, the Austrians had to start from the pit lane. Mansell managed not a good start, so he had to defend himself against Schumacher and Senna, while his team-mate Patrese took the lead. During the first round Senna overtook Schumacher on the outside rail of a curve.

The dominance of the two Williams FW14B showed that the two pilots were able to outperform the rest of the field, although they dueled during the following rounds for the top position. On lap 13 Schumacher once again found a way to overtake Senna. This turned out a little later also behind Alesi and Brundle back and finally retired in lap 17 due to a defect of electronics.

Thierry Boutsen and Johnny Herbert dropped out after they collided in the battle for seventh place. The second Ligier driver Érik Comas had to give up a little later due to a gearbox failure.

With the victory of Nigel Mansell Riccardo Patrese and before Michael Schumacher same podium occupation was like two weeks before the Grand Prix of Mexico. The third double victory in the third race meant the maximum number of points possible up to that point both for the team and for Williams Mansell and Patrese. Jean Alesi crossed the finish line in fourth place ahead of his teammate Ivan Capelli. The Michele Alboreto Vorqualifikant was sixth.
