Background

Eric van de Poele changed from Brabham to Fondmetal, there to replace Andrea Chiesa, who ended his Formula 1 career after only a few months. Just in time for this change, a new chassis was completed on the type GR02 after the copy used by Chiesa had been irreparably damaged during training for the Grand Prix of France. Brabham committed no substitute driver, so Damon Hill took the only driver for the team.

Training

For the first time in the current season Riccardo Patrese achieved the qualifying time and thus refer his teammate Nigel Mansell, who had nine times reached the pole position on the ten previous race weekends, to second place. Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher were the second row in front of their teammates Gerhard Berger and Martin Brundle.

Race

Patrese went from pole position in the lead. In order to avoid a collision with his teammate, Mansell had a short walk from the gas, which the two McLaren drivers Senna and Berger allowed to overtake him. Further back in the field, the two collided Ligier drivers Érik Comas and Thierry Boutsen, which led to the two rotators. Johnny Herbert and Gabriele Tarquini could not escape in time and were thus involved in the accident. All four pilots involved were not able to continue the race.

In the eighth round Mansell overtook Berger. When trying to overtake Senna, but he made a mistake in the 31st round, which Berger came back to third place. Three laps later, Mansell went past him again. As Patrese after a mistake at first fell back and finally had to retire due to an engine failure, Mansell was on the second place, the theoretically sufficient to prematurely assure the world title already in the eleventh season of 16 races. However, due to an unscheduled pit stop he fell 15 laps before the end of the race back to sixth place. He then benefited from the failure Schumacher, which was triggered by a fraction of the rear wing due to a collision with his team-mate Brundle.

After Nigel Mansell had passed within seven rounds at Mika Häkkinen, Martin Brundle and Gerhard Berger, he was again on the second rank. Häkkinen came in the 73rd round of Brundle, whose sixth gear at this time no longer worked, over. In the wake of a failed overtaking maneuver against Berger himself Hakkinen turned. In an attempt to avoid a collision with this, Berger turned also. However, both were able to continue without loss of position in the race. Thus Senna won ahead of Mansell, Berger, Hakkinen and Brundle. Ivan Capelli was sixth in the final championship point of the day.

By winning the world title after the eleventh of 16 races of the season Nigel Mansell set a record that was only ten years later broken by Michael Schumacher.
