1998 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship

The Volleyball Women's World Cup 1998 was held from November 3 to 12 in Japan. The Cubans could successfully defend their title and were for the third time world champion. The Games were held in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Tokyo, Matsumoto, Tokuyama and Kagoshima.

Mode

The sixteen participants played in the first round in four groups of four. The top three teams in each group reached the second round, which was played in two groups of six. The four best teams from each group then played in the classification matches to the ranks of one to eight.

First round

The German women left after three defeats in the preliminary round. It played: Hanka Pachale, Christina Benecke, Angelina Green, Sylvia Roll, Susanne lame, Tanya Hart, Judith Flemig, Beatrice Dömeland, Nancy Celis, Johanna Reinink, Claudia Wilke and Kerstin Tzscherlich. Coach was Siegfried Köhler.

Qualification

Japan hosts qualified automatically. The other starting places were awarded in continental qualifying tournaments.

Europe

In the European Qualifications were twenty teams in five groups of four. Three of these teams had prevailed in earlier in playoff games. The five group winners directly reached the finals in Japan. Two runners-up completed an additional playoff duel. In this case, Italy prevailed over the Czech Republic.

North and Central America

The NORCECA determined their World Cup qualifiers in a triple and a group of four. The group winners were directly qualified and the runners completed two playoff games.

South America

In South America, four teams played a double round " every man for himself ". The two most successful teams reached the tournament in Japan.

Asia

In Asia, there was a preliminary decision by two groups of four. The group winners directly reached the World Cup and the two runners-up were in a playoff duel in order to determine the third Asian representative.

Africa

In Africa first occurred three teams in a pre-judging, two of which qualified for the final group with a total of four teams. The group winners received the only African spot at the World Cup.
