The Grand Prix of Germany 2001 was held on July 29 held at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim was the twelfth round of the Formula 1 season 2001.

Background

After the Grand Prix of Great Britain, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' championship with 37 points ahead of David Coulthard and with 50 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 52 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 72 points ahead of Williams - BMW.

With Michael Schumacher, Barrichello, Mika Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine (once each ) were four former winners of this Grand Prix.

Heinz -Harald Frentzen was fired by Jordan and replaced by Ricardo Zonta.

It was the last Formula 1 race was held on the "old" Hockenheimring, before the track was from 2002 replaced by a truncated variant.

Training

In the first free practice Irvine drove the fastest lap. He was followed by Juan Pablo Montoya and Häkkinen. In the second free Traning Ralf Schumacher drove followed by Montoya and Michael Schumacher set the fastest time.

Qualifying

In qualifying, again drove the Williams drivers the fastest times, this time in reverse order. It was Montoya's first pole position of his Formula 1 career, and also the first of a driver from Colombia. Behind Ralf Schumacher Michael Schumacher was third fastest.

Warm-Up

Even in the warm-up the Williams drivers were up front. Ralf Schumacher drove it faster than Montoya, followed by Coulthard.

Race

First Start

At the start of the race Michael Schumacher's Ferrari accelerated not good and was overtaken by several drivers. Luciano Burti was no longer evade the Ferrari in the location and drove him into the back. Burtis Prost went on then and overturned. On landing he met a Arrows and only arrived at the track barrier to stand. At Schumacher's Ferrari, the right rear suspension was damaged, and he also lost his rear wing. The race was stopped and restarted later with unchanged number of rounds due to this accident. The Minardi driver Tarso Marques and Fernando Alonso started the first start from the pit lane. For the second start they took back to their original starting positions again.

Second start

Since this season replacement vehicles were allowed Burti and Schumacher also took part in this launch.

At the second start all riders came away well. Montoya defended his lead and remained ahead of his teammate. In position three, Michael Schumacher sized one. In midfield, there was a collision between Nick Heidfeld and Pedro de la Rosa, thereby excreting both drivers. De la Rosa had a braking when driving on the first chicane and drove Heidfeld in his car. In the first round Barrichello and Coulthard battled to fifth position, however, Barrichello was able to prevail.

After the first round Montoya led ahead of Ralf and Michael Schumacher, Hakkinen, Barrichello and Coulthard.

Barrichello drove faster than Hakkinen and was brought up at the end of the second round, close to the McLaren drivers. In the third round Barrichello overtook him on the outside track and was new fourth. However, the field pulled apart at the syringe, only Barrichello closed on Michael Schumacher on and overtook him shortly afterwards without a fight. Behind it there was some jostling for position. Ricardo Zonta collided with the vehicle of Jos Verstappen and lost the front wing, Verstappen suffered a puncture. Both then had to pit stop, Zonta had little later the car park. At the top of the field Barrichello was the quickest and caught up on Ralf Schumacher.

In midfield, there was another battle between Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli. Panis overtook Trulli, but came here from the ideal line and had to abbreviate a chicane. When trying to counter Trulli lost control of his vehicle and turned, and he thereby lost a few places.

In the twelfth round of the first drivers with the pit stops began. Meanwhile, Mika Hakkinen had a technical defect and had to park his vehicle. In lap 15 Barrichello went with the first riders of the leading group on his pit stop, indicating a two-stop strategy.

Shortly afterwards, there were two further failures: Kimi Raikkonen and Eddie Irvine presented their vehicles in the pit lane from.

After his pit stop Barrichello was again fast, and that closed on David Coulthard. A few laps later, he was right behind Coulthard and overtook him receipt of the new circuit.

In the 21st round of the Leading Montoya came to his only stop. The tank system was not working properly and you had to switch to the backup system. This cost Montoya a lot of time, so he came out of the pits behind Barrichello. Michael Schumacher also came a lap later to his stop, which went smoothly. Schumacher was behind Barrichello back on track. When Herausbeschleunugen from the pit exit however, he had a technical defect and had to park his Ferrari at the roadside.

Ralf Schumacher was yet to his pit stop. This time it was at the Williams team no problems, so Ralf Schumacher kept the lead.

After his bad pit stop Montoya had to leave shortly after his vehicle entirely, since it had a defect. This was not the last technical defect in a bolide the top group: David Coulthard suffered after his pit stop an engine failure.

Barrichello came in round 31 for his second stop. In his case there were problems with the tank system and he lost a lot of time. Since his lead before the stop, however, was on Jacques Villeneuve for about a minute, he kept the second position.

After the pit stops now led Ralf Schumacher before Barrichello, Villeneuve, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jenson Button and Jean Alesi.

By the end of the race changed to this order anything and Ralf Schumacher celebrated his third victory of his Formula 1 career. For Jacques Villeneuve was the last place on the podium in his Formula 1 career.
