2001 Malaysian Grand Prix

The Malaysian Grand Prix 2001 took place on 23 March at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang instead and was the second race of the Formula 1 season 2001. Winner was Michael Schumacher (Ferrari ) in front of Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari ) and David Coulthard (McLaren -Mercedes).

Background

According to the Australian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 4 points ahead of David Coulthard and 6 points on Rubens Barrichello. In the Constructors' Championship, Ferrari led with 8 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes and 10 points ahead of Sauber Petronas.

With Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher both former winners entered in this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice went Jarno Trulli ( Jordan - Honda) set the fastest time, followed by Michael Schumacher and Barrichello ( Ferrari both ). In the second free practice Barrichello was fastest. Second fastest was followed by Mika Häkkinen (McLaren -Mercedes) Ralf Schumacher ( Williams - BMW).

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher secured the pole position. His team-mate Barrichello set the second fastest time, followed by Ralf Schumacher.

Warm Up

The Warm Up Rubens Barrichello was more than a second faster from the second fastest David Coulthard. The third fastest time went Jarno Trulli.

Race

Michael Schumacher started the race in the T-car, as he drove off in the warm-up with his Ferrari off the track.

In the lap Heinz-Harald Frentzen was unusually slow, so that all passed him and he therefore had to start the race from the rear. The reason for his problems was a computer error. When then all vehicles should fit into their starting position, caused Giancarlo Fisichella a rejected take-off by he had not taken his starting position properly. The race was shortened by one lap through the take-off and Frentzen was back to his starting place 9. At the start of the new formation lap Juan Pablo Montoya stopped. However, he quickly changed enough in the replacement vehicle in order to be able to start from the pit lane.

At the start Michael Schumacher came away well and defended his lead easily. However, his teammate Rubens Barrichello had difficulties. Ralf Schumacher placed to the left of Barrichello and both bow side by side into the first corner. This kept on Häkkinen, so Ralf Schumacher unlocked and both could overtake. When Michael Schumacher went to the pits, his lead was so great that he did not lose his leadership. Verstappen and Hakkinen fought a tough fight, which allowed Frentzen to pass at the same time in a curve on both. Then Frentzen also overtook Ralf Schumacher.

After Verstappen went to the box, Häkkinen took on Ralf Schumacher, but could not overtake him until the end of the race.

It won Michael Schumacher ahead of his teammate Rubens Barrichello. The third podium place went to David Coulthard, followed by Heinz -Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen.
