2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup

The 6th FIFA Futsal World Cup 2008 was held in Brazil from 30 September to 19 October 2008. For the first time 20 teams took part in the futsal tournament. The opening ceremony was held in Brasília, the final in Rio de Janeiro. The host nation Brazil won by a 4-3 victory in the penalty shoot-out against Spain their fourth title.

Hosts and venues

Brazil was the first time from a Futsal World Cup, since this is officially organized by FIFA. As venues the capital Brasília and Rio de Janeiro were used.

  • In Brasília, the games were held in the Ginásio Nilson Nelson. The hall opened in 1973 offers 11,200 spectators. The venue was used to host preliminary rounds of 20 and six intermediate round games.
  • In Rio de Janeiro the Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso served as the venue. Up to 12,600 spectators could in 1954 and 2007 opened the converted multi-purpose arena watching the games. In addition to 20 preliminary round and six second round games, the semi-final and final matches were played in the arena. The frequently referred to as Maracanazinho Arena is located in close proximity to the Maracanã stadium.

Participant

The field was increased from 16 to 20 teams. For the Solomon Islands and Libya, it was the first finals appearance. Hosts Brazil qualified automatically as the only team. Except in Europe was as a qualification tournament in each case the continental championship used.

The European qualification was initially ( eight four-team, two with three teams ) is divided into ten groups, of which the group winners and the two best runners qualified for the play-off games. There, the six World Cup participants were then played in home and away matches. Surprises were from mostly, only the four-time World Cup participant Netherlands had already failed in the group stage and finished there only Rank 3 behind Bosnia - Herzegovina and Lithuania.

In South America, the finalists were determined during the Copa América de Futsal 2008. Since Brazil is already qualified team won the tournament and qualified next to Uruguay and Argentina, the fourth-placed Paraguay for the final round.

In Asia, the Asian Futsal Championship 2008 served as a qualification tournament. When aligned in the final round of the Thailand Iran won his 9th Asia Championship title and qualified for the fifth time in a row for the final round. In addition, hosts Thailand, Japan and China prompted the final ticket. Australia, who played until 2006 in the Ozeanienzone, missed the first time Viertelfinalaus the finals appearance.

In the CONCACAF Futsal Championship 2008, the three World Cup participants North and Central American zone were determined. The tournament won Guatemala by a final against Cuba. The last place was the U.S. by a 7-1 win over Panama in the match for 3rd place

Two nations were first allowed to start from Africa. At the end of March 2008 aligned Futsal European Championship 2008 Libya claimed in the final against the previous series winner in Egypt on penalties.

From Oceania, seven teams competed for the final place for the first time missing the previous series winner Australia because of the change in the Asia zone. As part of the OFC Futsal Championship 2008 in Fiji developed a three-way battle between the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tahiti. The former prevailed scarce and represented the first time Oceania at a Futsal World Cup.

Mode

Despite the increase in the team number from 16 to 20, the mode remained almost the same. The 20-team first played in four preliminary round groups of five teams. Within each group, each team plays every other team once. The two best group in each group qualify for the second group stage, in which the eight teams into two groups of four (two each preliminary round winner and two first round second per group) were distributed again and again fought out against any team a game. The top two in each group qualified for the semifinals, which will take place in the knockout system. Case of a tie in the first group stage decides the direct comparison, in the second group stage on goal difference over the placement.

The draw for the groups took place in the Brazilian capital Brasília in the Centro de Convenções Ulisses Guimarães on 10 July 2008.

Awards

The Golden Ball for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament went to the Brazilian Falcão. His teammates shoemaker and Tiago received the Silver or Brozenen ball the Golden Boot for the top scorer received the Russian Pula against the Brazilians Falcão and Lenísio. The first time Golden Glove award also went to the Brazilian Tiago. The Fair Play Award was the team from Spain.
