Background

After the Firestone 550 Will Power led the Drivers' Championship with 36 points ahead of Scott Dixon with 48 points ahead of James Hinchcliffe. At the engine manufacturers Chevrolet led with 3 points ahead of Honda with 26 points, ahead of Lotus.

Training
