2013 Milwaukee IndyFest

The Milwaukee IndyFest 2013 was held on 15 June at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin, United States and instead was the ninth race of the IndyCar Series in 2013.

Background

After the Firestone 550 Hélio Castroneves led the Drivers' Championship with 22 points on Marco Andretti and 27 points on Ryan Hunter -Reay.

In the starting field, there were two changes. Ryan Briscoe broke Oriol Servia after a race break back at Panther Racing from. Ana Beatriz returned after three races break back in the car with the number 18 Dale Coyne Racing back and took over the car from Pippa Mann.

The IndyFest took place on Saturday night. Andretti Sports Marketing, a company of the Andretti family, organized the event.

With Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan ( twice each ), Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Hunter -Reay (once each ) were five former winners of this race. Hunter -Reay was also a former winner of the Time Warner Cable Road Runner 250, a Champ Car race at this track.

Training

In the first session Marco Andretti was the fastest driver in front of his teammate Hunter -Reay and Josef Newgarden. In the second session, the first two positions remained unchanged. Takuma Satō was third.

Qualifying

The qualifying session was held in the time trial. Each pilot drove two fast laps in a row. The average speed, scoring determined the order of the grid.

Andretti drove again the fastest lap ahead of his teammate James Hinchcliffe and Will Power. The other two pilots Andretti Hunter -Reay and EJ Viso followed in fourth and fifth places. By the power of his time had set, the four Andretti drivers were in the top four positions. Sebastian Saavedra reached its hitherto best qualifying position with sixth place.

Race

When starting Andretti kept the lead. Hunter -Reay and Hinchcliffe followed behind before power, but at the Hinchcliffe passed in the second round. Kanaan finished fifth in the initial phase. Hunter -Reay tried in the tenth round to attack the lead, but was unsuccessful.

In lap 21 Simona de Silvestro solved with a wall contact in the fourth curve from a yellow phase. De Silvestro took the race although again, gave further 48 laps with slower pace however. At the restart, Alex Tagliani turned, which led to a further caution period. Tagliani took the race also back on, but later admitted to having a gearbox failure.

At the restart Andretti kept the lead. However, it was overtaken in the 62nd round of Hunter- Reay. Shortly afterwards began a pit stop phase, briefly went into power management and finally Satō, who relied on a different strategy and was already in the first caution period on the box. In the 91st round, he went to the box and handed the lead briefly to Justin Wilson and finally to Viso. A little later in the 98th round Andretti stopped on the backstretch with electronic problems are. After a repair stop, he went back to the track, but abandoned the race shortly before the end.

In the yellow phase was the lead due to pit stops, to Satō back. He demonstrated Castroneves, Hunter -Reay, Viso and Hinchcliffe. In the 155th round of the second pit stop phase began under green. In this Hunter -Reay, Viso and Power took the lead briefly until they went to Satō again. In this phase of the race Sebastien Bourdais and Tristan Vautier gave up with technical problems. In Bourdais was a problem with the fuel pump, the reason for the failure.

In the last quarter racing Hunter -Reay was up. He overtook first Castroneves and went into the 198 lap Satō over the lead. Satō was shortly thereafter with tire problems on the box. A short time later, an accident of Beatriz sparked another caution period. In this the other pilots last time went to the box. This Hinchcliffe had trouble changing tires. Hunter -Reay was before Castroneves and Power at the restart in the lead. He continued until the end of the race successively, while Castroneves was set by power under pressure. Castroneves had pursued a different strategy than Hunter -Reay and power and was, as Satō, gone in the first phase to the yellow box.

Hunter -Reay eventually won before Castroneves, Power, Viso, Hinchcliffe, Dixon, Franchitti and Satō. The first eight drivers were the only ones who were still on the lead lap. Wilson and Canaan completed the top 10 with a lap behind. Power was thus for the first time in the season on the podium. The first five pilots drove all with Chevrolet engines.

In the overall standings Castroneves stayed on the first place. Behind exchanged Hunter -Reay and Andretti positions.
