205th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 205th Infantry Division was a major unit of the Wehrmacht in the German Reich.

History

The 205th Infantry Division was set up in August 1939, initially under the name 14th Landwehr Division in Freiburg im Breisgau / Military District V Stuttgart and regrouped as a division of the third wave formation in the 205th Infantry Division on 1 January 1940.

After the successful western campaign, the division was suspended on 17 July 1940 to the permanent staff and reconvened in February 1941.

As of 1941, the Division took center as part of Army Group in the war against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945. It proved to be in the fighting in space Welikije Luki and in the defensive battles at the interface between Army Groups Center and North at Newel, under whose command it was made in late 1943 and the end of 1944, she followed in the cauldron of Courland.

The division was one of the few large organizations which closed competed their way into Russian captivity in the unconditional surrender on May 8.

The memorial for the fallen soldiers of the Division is located in Schramberg.
