Abashiri, Hokkaido
Abashiri (Japanese网 走 市, -shi) is a city and the administrative center of the prefecture on the island of Hokkaido Okhotsk.
Abashiri is famous above all for its prison for political prisoners from the Meiji period. Today stands on the site only a museum, the old prison was replaced by a new high-security wing.
Geography
Abashiri is located on the Sea of Okhotsk in the east of the sub-prefecture of Okhotsk. It is located about 50 km east of Kitami.
Climate
Because of its location has Abashiri on a very cool monsoon climate, which falls in the winter partly meter high snow.
History
City foundation was in March 1872.
