Abbans-Dessus

Abban -Dessus is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Abban -Dessus is at 414 m, 2 km north of Quingey and about 17 km southwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located on the western edge of the Jura Mountains, a scenic location on a projection of the ridge between the valleys of the Doubs and Loue.

The area of ​​4.43 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the ridge, which belongs to the outermost foothills of the Jura and drags in the southwest-northeast between the valleys of Doubs and Loue in the north to the south. With 470 m is reached on the hill southeast of the village is the highest elevation of Abban -Dessus. To the north- east, the municipality area extends up to the height of Montgardot forest (456 m ) to the southwest to the Côte de Moini. The area is drained north to the Doubs.

Neighboring communities of Abban -Dessus -Dessous are Abban and Boussières in the north, east and south, and Quingey Byans -sur -Doubs in the West.

History

Since the 11th century Abban -Dessus was the center of a dominion which belonged through most of its Jouffroy family. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Abban -Dessus was built in the 18th century. The castle is first mentioned in the year 1092, shows components from different time periods. One of the oldest parts belongs to the square Romanesque keep (12th century); two more towers date from the 14th century, while the residential buildings were renovated and remodeled in the 18th century. In the old town several houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.

Population

With 303 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Abban -Dessus is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1891 199 people were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again. Since then, the population has tripled.

Economy and infrastructure

Abban -Dessus was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Boussières after Quingey. Further road links exist with Abban lingerie and Byans -sur- Doubs.
