Ahaura

Ahaura is a village in New Zealand. It is in the Grey District of the West Coast region, at the mouth of Ahaura in the Grey River. The State Highway 7 and the railway line Stillwater - Westport pass through the town. The nearest towns are Greymouth 34 km southwest of Reefton and 44 km north-east.

The population of the district statistical Ahaura which includes a far larger area than the town itself, amounted to 2006 380 inhabitants, a decrease of 21 since 2001.

The European colonization of the area began in 1858 with the use of pasture land at the confluence of Ahura and Grey River.

Education

The Awahono School -Grey Valley is a co-educational primary school for grades 1-8, with currently 113 pupils. The decile rating is 4 This school was established in early 2005 from the merger of schools of Ahaura, Moonlight, Ngahere and Totara Flat.
