The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University ( A & M ) is a public university in Normal near Huntsville (Alabama ) in the U.S. state of Alabama. Currently here are enrolled 6,000 students. It belongs to the group of historic African-American colleges and universities.

History

The Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University was founded in 1875 as the State Normal School and University for the Education of the Colored Teachers and Students for African-American students. In 1878 she was renamed the State Normal and Industrial School, 1890 in State Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes, 1919 in State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes and 1948 in State Agricultural and Mechanical Institute for Negroes. Until 1969 it was given its present name.

The library was founded in 1904 with money from the Carnegie Foundation.

Sports

The sports teams of the A & M are the Bulldogs. The university is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
