Alastair Redfern

Alastair Llewellyn John Redfern ( born September 1, 1948) is a British Anglican theologian. He is since 2005 Bishop of Derby in the Church of England.

Life

Redfern visited the School in Bicester Bicester, Oxfordshire, Christ Church College, Oxford University and the London Law School. Redfern first studied law with the career goal Solicitor, but later changed the subject. He then studied theology at Westcott House College, Cambridge, and at Queen 's College, Birmingham. He graduated with a Master of Arts ( MA) and a PhD as a PhD in Philosophy.

In 1976 he was ordained a deacon. 1977 followed the ordination to the priesthood. From 1976 to 1979 he was Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in the district of Tettenhall Regis in Wolverhampton in the Diocese of Lichfield. From 1979 to 1987 he was a lecturer and professor of church history at the Ripon College Cuddesdon, near Oxford. Later he became Vice Principal there. During this time, he was from 1983 to 1987 at the same time vicar at All Saints Church in Cuddesdon. From 1987 to 1997 he was Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) at Bristol Cathedral in Bristol. He also taught church history at Bristol University. From 1991 to 1997 he served as dortiger Diocesan Director for the training of priests in the diocese. From 1997 he was suffragan bishop of Grantham, from 1998 to 2005 at the same time Dean of Stamford. From 2000 he was a canon and Präbendar at Lincoln Cathedral. He was appointed as successor to Jonathan Sansbury Bailey Bishop of Derby, 2005. On 12 November 2005, he was introduced with a solemn Mass at the Cathedral of Derby ( Cathedral of All Saints ) in his office.

Redfern is a recognized theologian and church historian. He wrote several books, scientific papers, magazines and radio programs on various topics of the Christian faith. His publications include the books Ministry and Priesthood (1999), Being Anglican (2000) and Growing the Kingdom ( 2009).

The focus of his work pastoral church were in the care of homeless and in his voluntary work for Oxfam and Christian Aid. Redfern also strove for the urban renewal of many communities in Lincolnshire and wrote articles for local radio stations.

On the occasion of the 2009 European election and the UK regional elections Redfern was in 2009 together with George Henry Cassidy, Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, with Anthony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood, and Humphrey Ivo John Southern, Bishop of Repton signatory to a statement, the the choice objectives of the British National Party as " the Christian doctrine and example of Jesus Christ incompatible " at her.

Membership in the House of Lords

Redfern heard since 2010 as minister Lord the House of Lords. He was in the House of Lords successor to Anthony Russell, Bishop of Ely.

Private

Redfern is married to his second wife Caroline Redfern. His first wife Jane died in 2004. He is the father of two daughters from his first marriage. His leisure time activities and hobbies Redfern counts reading and walking.
