Alex George

Alexander Segger George ( born April 4, 1939 in East Fremantle, Western Australia ) is an Australian botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " ASGeorge ".

Professional life

George came in 1959, at the age of 20 years, the post of laboratory assistant in the Western Australian Herbarium at. He worked for a year under Charles Austin Gardener, until it was retired. This first boss it leads to the back part of his interest in banksia. In 1963, he received his bachelors degree from the University of Western Australia and the following year he added the title of Major botany to do so. He continued to work at the Western Australian Herbarium, in 1968 but appointed "Australian Botanical Liaison Officer" at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London. George is also interested in history, especially of biographies of the Western Australian naturalist. He also published a number of historical references, such as a history of the Royal Society of Western Australia and a throwback to the naturalist Rica Erickson. In 1999 he published a book about William Dampier's naturalist collection in Western Australia with the title William Dampier in New Holland: Australia 's First Natural Historian.

George initially specialized in orchids, but soon he focused on the genera Banksia and Dryandra from the family Proteaceae. He wrote the words to Celia Rosser's three-volume work "The Banksias ", which appeared in 1981-2001 and are included in the Rosser's drawings of each Banksiaart. In 1981 the magazine " Nuytsia " Georges seminal monograph "The genus Banksia L. f ( Proteceae ) ", the first taxonomic treatise on banksia since George Bentham's "Flora Australiensis " from the 1870s. Three years later he published the popular "The Banksia Book" and again a year later, "An Introduction to the Proteceae of Western Australia ". 1999 his taxonomy of banksias and Dryandren was published as part of the monograph series "Flora Australiensis ".

From 1981 to 1993 George was living in Canberra and worked as editor of the monograph series "Flora Australiensis ". His extensive revision of the genus Verticordia with new taxa published in " Nuytsia " 1991. Today, George has been living in Perth and working as a botanical and publishing consultant. It is also a " Honory Research Associate " at the Western Australian Herbarium and deputy professor at the " School of Biological Sciences" of the Murdoch University.

Honors

In 1976, the peculiar genus Alexgeorgea was named from the family of Restionaceae by Alexander Segger George.

On June 11, 2012 Dr. George was appointed a member of the Order of Australia, because of its

"service to conservation and the environment as a botanist, historian and author, particularly in the area of Australian flora, and through roles with national and international professional organizational.
