The place is located in the Douro Valley, which is known for its wines. Since the 1960s, however Alfândega in Portugal is particularly famous for its cherry growing.

History

Under Arab rule, the town was an administrative city. During the Reconquista of the place was the scene of battles, and smaller groups of knights were talking points here. King D.Dinis granted city rights in 1294 first city ( Foral ) and made ​​it the seat of a circle.
