Alfred Wahlberg

Alfred Wahlberg ( born February 13, 1834 in Stockholm, † October 4, 1906 in Tranås ) was a Swedish painter.

Biography

According to Wahlberg's own statements, his father was a craft painter and his mother the daughter of an Italian sculptor. As a teenager he learned the father's occupation, but because he showed interest in music, he received piano and clarinet lessons at the Municipal Academy of Music. In his early years he was not very successful. He provided himself hastily through participation in a chapel, gave himself piano lessons and excelled at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Arts, although he was never enrolled as a student. In 1856 he was able for the first time to sell an image and the following year he moved to Dusseldorf. There he was briefly Hans Fredrik Gude students in, but mainly he painted independently. More sales allowed him to travel to Holland and Belgium after which he returned to Stockholm.

His underwent significant Wahlberg when he settled in 1866 in Paris. In 1868, he was able to exhibit several paintings at the Paris Salon, the witness his transition from the Düsseldorf School of French style. He acquired the art of the French school without their masters to imitate. At the World Exhibition of 1878 he received a medal first class. He became in 1866 member of the Swedish Academy of Arts and entered 1880 a deputy professorship without teaching responsibilities at. He spent almost every summer in different parts of Sweden, which gave him ample motives. In his last years he experimented with new modes of representation, however, were less well received.
