Altendorf, Schwyz

Altendorf ( in local dialect Old Village [ ˌ ɑltə d̥oɾf ] ) is a village and a municipality in the Swiss canton of Schwyz March. It lies on the southern shore of the Upper Lake and includes the hamlet Seestatt and Steinegg and the scattered settlements on the mountain shell, Mittlisberg, Vorderberg and Schlipf.

Geography

The municipal area covers 2085 hectares, the highest point ( Rinderweidhorn ) lies on 1'316 meters above sea level. M., the railway station ( today's stop on the SBB) to 412 m above sea level. M.

The municipality borders the west to the municipalities Freisbach and Einsiedeln, east on the communities of laughter and Galgenen and in the south on the community front valley. The northern outskirts of the village is bordered by Lake Zurich.

History

An early settlement since Roman times can be assumed since the excavations at the Parish Church (1960 /61), where in alluvial, perhaps stemming from a Roman manors layers besides potsherds of the 1st to 3rd century AD and five Roman coins ( from the period 14-138 AD) and a Gallic coin ( Billon Sequani from the 3rd or 2nd century BC) came to light. Railway

In 1875 the left bank Seebahn the Swiss Northeastern Railway was routed through Altendorf under the direction of engineer Boesch.
