Altura is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) of Castro Marim, Algarve. 2163 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

According to the history of the entire circle was also Altura prehistoric settlement area before it became part of the Roman province of Lusitania. After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD, the Moors conquered the region in the early 8th century. During the Reconquista Paio Peres Correia conquered the territory in 1242, the king D.Afonso III. in 1277 for the first time gave the city rights.

The church today Altura was only in 1993 by splitting the municipality of Castro Marim created.

Management

Altura is the seat of an eponymous municipality ( Freguesia ), the smallest and youngest in the municipality of Castro Marim. The following two villages form the municipality:

  • Altura
  • Praia da Alagoa

Economy

The community is dominated by agriculture. In particular, viticulture and grain farming, and especially wheat, oats and barley are the main agricultural products, as well as citrus fruits and olive oil are mentioned. It dominates the dryland.

Tourism, especially at the beach Praia da Alagoa, however, has increased in recent decades increasingly important.
