Odeleite is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) of Castro Marim, Algarve. 782 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

According to the history of the entire circle was probably also Odeleite prehistoric settlement area before it became part of the Roman province of Lusitania. After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD, the Moors conquered the region in the early 8th century. They chatted in today Odeleite an agricultural production unit ( Qarya ). And today's local name from the Arabs back to the running river here wdi al - laban ( Portuguese: Rio de Leite, dt: River of Milk ) called. During the Reconquista Paio Peres Correia conquered today the district of Castro Marim in 1242, the king D.Afonso III. in 1277 for the first time gave the city rights.

Since the 16th century Odeleite is an independent municipality and received to a private place of worship.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the municipality include various windmills, the cemetery, and the three-nave parish church Igreja de Paroquial Odeleite (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Visitação ) from the 16th century. The historical center of Odeleite as a whole is a listed building.

The archaeological excavations Alcarias de Odeleite feel the scale here in the 8th century agricultural production site according to ( Qarya ) of the Arabs.

On a hill a lookout point ( miradouro ) is set up, freeing a wide view over the surrounding countryside, including of the nearby reservoirs Barragem de Odeleite and Barragem de Beliche.

With the Casa de Odeleite in June 2012, a local history museum has been opened, should follow the facilities of rural tourism.
