Alvin Batiste

Alvin Batiste ( born November 7, 1932 in New Orleans, † May 6, 2007 there ), was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, pianist, composer and university teacher.

Life and work

Batiste had on his instrument a classical education; during high school, he played with Ed Blackwell and appeared with Guitar Slim and ukulele Lemon. After completing his military service, he began his career as a musician the mid-1950s in New Orleans. He founded in 1956 the American Jazz Quintet with Ellis Marsalis, Harold Battiste and Ed Blackwell to play modern chamber jazz (first Einspielun 1956), played with Ornette Coleman and worked as a music teacher. He toured in 1958 with Ray Charles, returning home to study at Southern University in Baton Rouge. Then he performed with the Symphony Orchestra of his native city of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Later he founded the Jazzstronauts.

From 1969 to the mid-1980s, he taught at he directed the Jazz Institute of Southern University. His students include Branford Marsalis, Donald Harrison and Herlin Riley.

His work is documented on five albums under his own name; Digby Fairweather he is an instrumentalist with an eclectic style - comparable Tony Coe in England - both in traditional and modern jazz at home and also integrated elements of contemporary music. As a composer he wrote three " New Orleans Suites " for the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra.

Batiste was to recordings by Cannonball Adderley, Billy Cobham (with whom he also appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival), Branford Marsalis and Marlon Jordan involved; In 1987 he took part in Freddie Hubbard's Satchmo Legacy with ribbon. Since 1981 he was a member of John Carter's Clarinet Summit with David Murray and Jimmy Hamilton and at the latter Recordings ( 1984, 1987 ) are involved. 1989 Batiste was involved as a guest musician Wynton Marsalis ' album Crescent City Christmas Card, 1990 at album Ka.leidoduke by Ernie Wilkins.
