Always Say Goodbye

Occupation

Always Say Goodbye is a jazz album by Charlie Haden and his Quartet West, which was recorded in 1993 and released on Verve.

Background

Always Say Goodbye is a tribute of Haden and Quartet West at the Hollywood productions and the jazz of the 1930s and 1940s. The album begins and ends with excerpts from the Howard Hawks film The Big Sleep 1946 "The record begins and ends with dialogue from one of my favorite movies ever. The Big Sleep. I would be so happy to have been on set, Raymond Chandler 'd hit played with Bird, Chet and Larance at Tradewinds in Los Angeles. Somehow the music carries me .. mostly there. " The title track is a composition Haden that characterizes Broadbent's piano solo by the nostalgic mood of the album.

The album often used the artifice, a piece to play first from the Quartet West, only to fade in the original over. In the title Où es -tu mon amour? ( Where Are You, My Love? ) Plays Stephane Grappelli first with the Quartet West, then hides the piece in a version of the same piece from 1949 about who had played Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with an Italian rhythm section in Rome.
