Amiga Enhanced Chip Set

ECS (Enhanced Chip Set ) is an over the predecessor model OCS improved chipset, which was used in the computers Amiga 500plus, Amiga 600, Amiga 3000 and in the CDTV. He is seen as a collective term for the interaction of various coprocessors.

The ECS consists of three components:

  • Big / Fat Agnus,
  • Hires Denise and
  • Paula.

Big Agnus and Denise Hires are advancements of the original chips Agnus and Denise.

The successor of the ECS chipset for the Amiga was the AGA chipset.

Big / Fat Agnus

The name Agnus is derived from the word address generator. Of the chip operates as a chip - RAM controller and generates the necessary address for the DMA channels. It also contains the two coprocessors blitter and Copper and generates the various video synchronization signals.

Compared to these OCS Agnus versions could appeal to more chip RAM, namely 1 or 2 MB.

Hires Denise

The name derives from the English words from high- resolution display encoder. The chip controls the graphics output.

Compared to the OCS Denise this version could represent some higher resolutions (Productivity Mode), but at the expense of the number of simultaneously displayable colors.

Paula

The name Paula is derived from the English words Peripheral and audio. The chip controls the following tasks in the Amiga:

  • Input and output control for disk drives
  • Sound
  • Query of the analog inputs

This chip has not changed compared to the OCS and is maintained even at the AGA chipset.

Support and compatibility issues

The ECS was supported from AmigaOS 2.0.

Because of the many changes, some games do not work properly. Added to this was that the switch was made to the new chipset without much advance notice, which meant that the programmers were not prepared for the transition and there was therefore very little software with advanced features for the new chipset.
