André Bettencourt

André Bettencourt (* April 21, 1919 in Saint -Maurice- d'Ételan, † November 19, 2007 in Neuilly -sur -Seine ) was a French conservative politician.

Life

In his youth, Bettencourt was a member of the extreme right-wing group La Cagoule, which was financially supported by the founder of the French cosmetics group L' Oréal, Eugène Schueller. In addition, he wrote from 1940 to 1942 anti -Semitic articles for the financed by the Nazis newspaper La Terre Française.

Bettencourt married 1950 schools Ellers daughter Liliane. The two have a daughter, Françoise Bettencourt- Meyers, who is a member of the Board of L' Oréal today.

After the war he became a member of the liberal- conservative parties Centre national des Independants et paysans or Républicains Independants. In 1968, Bettencourt was briefly Minister of Post and Telecommunications. Immediately afterwards he was from 1968 to 1969 Minister of Industry. From 1970 to 1971 he was Minister of Cultural Affairs, and finally in 1973, French Foreign Minister briefly.
