Anuradhapura District
The district of Anuradhapura ( Sinhala: අනුරාධපුර දිස්ත්රික්කය, Tamil: அனுராதபுரம் மாவட்டம் ) is a district in the north central province of Sri Lanka. It has an area of 7,128 square kilometers and 855 562 inhabitants ( census 2012), of which 91 percent Sinhalese. Is the capital Anuradhapura.
Geography
The district Anuradhapura located in the northern inland areas of Sri Lanka and is part of the North Central Province. Neighboring districts are in the southeast of Polonnaruwa, Matale in the south, in the southwest of Kurunegala, Puttalam in the west, Mannar in the northwest, Vavuniya and Trincomalee in the north to the east.
The district has an area of Anuradhapura 7,179 square kilometers (of which 6,664 square miles of land and 515 square kilometers of inland waters). He is the area 's largest district in Sri Lanka.
Population
According to the 2012 census, the district has 855 562 inhabitants Anuradhapura. With 128 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is well below the average of Sri Lanka ( 323 inhabitants per square kilometer).
The great majority of the inhabitants of the district of Anuradhapura are Sinhalese. According to the 2012 census, they account for 90.9 percent of the district population. In addition, there is a minority of Moors or Tamil Muslims are the 8.2 percent of the population. Tamils are only a small minority of 0.7 percent.
Almost all Sinhala inhabitants of Anuradhapura hang on Buddhism, while the Moors to all profess to Islam. According to the 2012 census, 90.2 percent of the district 's population are Buddhist and 8.3 percent Muslim. Christians ( 1.1 per cent ) and Hindus ( 0.4 per cent) represent only small minorities.
Management
The head of the district is entitled District Secretary. The district is further divided into 22 divisions ( under a Division Secretary ). The cities and larger towns have their own government ( municipal council or municipal council ). There are 694 community councils ( Grama Niladharis ) for the 3,085 villages throughout the district.
