Archduke Otto of Austria (1865–1906)

Archduke Otto Franz Joseph Karl Ludwig Maria of Austria, called the beautiful Archduke (* April 21, 1865 in Graz, Austria, † November 1, 1906 in Vienna) was the younger brother of the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand and the father of the last Austrian Emperor Karl I. of Austria.

Origin

Otto was the son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria, the next oldest brother Franz Joseph I, and of Princess Maria Annunziata of Naples and Sicily. Otto's older brother was murdered in 1914 in Sarajevo the Austro- Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand of Austria -Este.

Since Emperor Franz Joseph his son Rudolf in 1889 lost and had no other sons, was now Otto's father, Karl Ludwig throne. After his death in 1896, the throne passed to Franz Ferdinand; as this temporarily seriously ill, it has been speculated about Otto's throne.

Childhood and youth

Otto had lost six years old his mother and was raised along with his older brother Franz Ferdinand headed by Alfred Ludwig Freiherr von Degen field. He was regarded as basically not interested in learning and also often played tricks on the teachers. Nevertheless, the teacher pulled him because of his cheerful temperament before the grumpy and irascible older brother. He was favored by his father, which contributed to the difficult relationship between the two brothers.

Life

Due to his life as skandalumwitterter loafers Otto alienated permanently held by the imperial court, so that withdrew the imperial family, and finally his wife, Princess Maria Josepha Luise of Saxony (1867-1944), from him.

In 1900 he contracted incurable syphilis and was thus sentenced to a year-long, agonizing suffering. In a villa in the suburbs of Vienna Cottageviertel Waehring he spent the last months of his life with his last lover, the young operetta singer Louise Robinson, who nursed him devotedly under the pseudonym sister Martha. His second nurse was his step-mother, the Infanta Maria Theresa of Portugal ( 1855-1944 ). Finally, Archduke Otto died in the presence of his spiritual adviser, the auxiliary bishop of Vienna Godfried Marschall on November 1, 1906.

Succession

After the death of his father was Otto's elder brother Franz Ferdinand by the Habsburg dynastic laws automatically heir apparent; special explanation was not necessary to do so. However, it was registered in the public that Emperor Franz Joseph I on his new heir to the throne gave absolutely no comment. Based on the medical history of Franz Ferdinand was considerable doubt as to whether Franz Ferdinand would ever be able to health, to be able to fill out the duties of the emperor.

1896 came Franz Ferdinand news to my attention that Count Goluchowski, Minister of the Imperial and Royal House and of Foreign Affairs, asked with regard to Franz Ferdinand lung disease the Emperor to consider a new system of succession. Immediately around the monarchy, there was talk that Otto would inherit the throne, especially since this had a remarkably large retinue available as it was not common for other archduke. Otto also was charged because of the illness of the heir with representation tasks that would have otherwise Franz Ferdinand perceive themselves. In addition, the fun-loving Otto was at this time at court despite his lifestyle in contrast to the sullen Franz Ferdinand still extremely popular. Franz Ferdinand was outraged about all the intrigue, and the fact that he could even inhabit only the Palais Modena, his younger brother, but the Palais Augarten. Franz Ferdinand felt snubbed, although he assured Otto to have no ambition to the throne.

Marriage and issue

He married on pressure of the imperial family on October 2, 1886 in Dresden, the Princess Maria Josepha Luise of Saxony ( 1867-1944 ), daughter of King George I of Saxony and Maria Anna of Portugal. This marriage was urgently necessary to maintain the good relationship with the Saxon royal house, because both Crown Prince Rudolf and Franz Ferdinand had Mary's older sister Princess Mathilde rejected as a bride and thus difficult snubbed the Saxons. From this marriage two children were born:
