Arvo Haavisto

Arvo Jaakko Haavisto ( born January 7, 1900 in Ilmajoki, † April 22, 1977 ) was a Finnish wrestler.

Career

Arvo Haavisto began after 1918 in Illmajoki with the rings. He first started as usual in Europe, in the Greco-Roman style, but already soon turned entirely on the free style to. With a third place in the welterweight division at the Finnish Championships in free style in 1923, he first appears in a list of winners at an important Ringer competition. In 1924 he became Vice- Finnish welterweight champion and was nominated for the Olympic Games the same year in Paris for the light weight. Although this is negotiated the first international championship in which he participated, Haavisto won the bronze medal.

Also at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, he was at the start and was even more successful than in 1924, because he was Olympic champion in the welterweight division.

Between 1924 and 1928 found no international championships take place in free style. Arvo had therefore no more boot options in such championships in those years. As from 1929 European Championships were conducted in free style, Arvo Haavisto was no longer there. Although he started yet for some events in Scandinavia, but soon resigned and became a coach.
